Director Stig Asmussen said although the game had its fair share of influences, everything the team included had to be justified.In this month’s episode of IGN Unfiltered (see the full episode below), Ryan McCaffrey sat down with Respawn’s Stig Asmussen to talk about the recently-released Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, his time at Sony Santa Monica, the history of blockbuster PlayStation exclusive God of War, and much more.When asked if the team had any trouble pitching a game as difficult as Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, which some describe as “Star Wars Dark Souls,” Asmussen said, “I mean, we’re a lot of different games, I think, and… there are bits and pieces here that, maybe, were inspired by one game or another. I think the thing that we all got aligned on is… the experience isn’t going to be what most people are going to expect from a Star Wars game.”
“There’s this idea of the ‘magic’ of Star Wars – that ‘almost anything can happen’ and ‘expect the unexpected’ and just embracing this idea of ‘Star Wars weird,'” Asmussen said. “Once we got around that, it’s like, ‘Yeah… all these pieces are kinda cool together.’ …But then, the problem becomes ‘how do we contextualize [them]… and, going back to the whole thing of ‘earning it,’ how do we get [each piece] to ‘earn’ the right, essentially, to be in a Star Wars game.”In addition to gameplay influences, Asmussen also touched on other Star Wars games he played before starting development on Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. “We played a lot of old games that we’d played in the past, but we tried to get a refresher on,” Asmussen said. “We played Jedi Outcast [and] Jedi Knight. We played Knights of the Old Republic, [The Force] Unleashed and Unleashed II.”
Asmussen went on to say his personal favorite Star Wars game ever was “without a doubt” Knights of the Old Republic, although he also enjoyed the notoriously difficult Super Nintendo title Super Star Wars as well as X-Wing VS TIE Fighter and the Star Wars Arcade game.For more of the IGN Unfiltered interview with Stig Asmussen, be sure to stay tuned to IGN each day this week.
