How to Unlock Island Evals[edit]

In order to get this feature in Resident Services, you’ll need to do a lot of groundwork to build out your island, including the following:

Isabelle has a number of suggestions she can give for ways to improve your town’s quality, and all of them need to be addressed in some way.

Invite More Villagers to Your Town[edit]

7 Villagers[edit]

Not everyone wants to visit a deserted island – and so Isabelle will give you feedback indicating the population may need to be bigger in order to get a more favorable rating.

At the time the Campground is completed, your town should have at least 6 residents – but you’ll want to get at least 7 or more to at least meet the qualifications to hit 3 Star Rank. After the first campground villager decides to move in, you’ll be able to start selling plots of land for villagers to move into – letting you set the terms of their arrival. More villagers may arrive at the campground or on Mystery Islands, or they may just claim a plot of land if they like your island enough.

You can also force villagers to appear using Amiibo Cards, which Isabelle will unlock at the Resident Services. This will force the amiibo card villager to immediately appear at your campground, but to entice them to stay in your town, you may need to do tasks for them over a few days, and then have a plot of land for them to buy.

Get Rid of Weeds[edit]

Island Rid of Weeds ✓[edit]

Another major part of your island’s image is making it presentable – which means making sure it doesn’t look like complete trash.

While you don’t technically need to get rid of every last weed on your island just for a 3 Star Rank, it will make attaining that goal a lot easier – so be sure to spend some time de-weeding, especially on the higher elevations and cliffs where they tend to run rampant. At the very least, try de-weeding around flowers to give them room to grow, as well as any trees and rocks so that you can get resources from them easier.

Build Fencing[edit]

Build Fencing ✓[edit]

Isabelle will also suggest adding to your town’s flair by utilizing fencing that Tom Nook has enabled for you. You’ll be able to get more fence designs each day at the Nook Shopping terminal, and each fence DIY project gives you 10 of that fence to spread around.

Consider creating gardens and yards using fencing, or creating paths between buildings. You can also use fencing to section off areas of your town, or even creating parks, barbecue areas – or places to trade items with your friends!

Flowers Planted and Watered ✓[edit]

Everyone loves flowers, and you’re bound to get better ratings with more flowers blooming all over the place – and not just on the highest cliffs.

Take the time to buy packs of different flowers from Timmy and Tommy, and place them all over – around the plaza, in front of homes, in yards with fencing – and much more. You can also take a trip to a Mystery Island to find more, and possibly rare colors or flowers you don’t have on your island. You should also head to a friend’s island and see if their flowers are different, and take some home to water and propagate more!

Add Bridges and Inclines[edit]

Extra Bridge and Incline Built ✓[edit]

Adding more infrastructure to your island will go a long way to increasing your town’s rating – unfortunately it can be a bit pricey.

Be sure to speak to Tom Nook and start connecting more parts of your island by adding more bridges to other parts of the rivers that flow around your town, and look for an ideal spot to add one or two inclines

If you’re looking to save on Bells, be sure to only buy the lowest costing bridges and inclines (which you can remove and add better ones in later when you’re feeling better about your bank account). Plus, don’t feel pressured to throw all your money into the projects at once, as your villagers will also donate small but meaningful amounts of Bells each day!

Build Exterior Furniture and DIY Items[edit]

25 Exterior Items Placed ✓[edit]

Arguably the most important part of improving your island’s image – you’re going to want to display as many items and set pieces as you can to make your town shine.

It’s around this time that Tom Nook will add a ton of new DIY Recipes and other items to be bought from the Nook Stop terminal, and they include countless exterior items to make your island look like a real town – including streetlamps, fountains, benches, and tons more.

The more extravagant the items, the better your rating is likely to be, so go wild! We eventually reached a 3 Star Town Rating with around 25 items placed, but its likely that bigger and more expensive items might move things along quicker.

Remember to keep checking the beach for Message Bottles with more DIY Recipes, talk to Villagers and see what they have to offer, and shoot down balloon presents for even more items.

3 Star Town Rating Rewards and Unlocks[edit]

Keep checking back with Isabelle to see how your rating is improving, and once you hit 3 stars, the feedback will come from none other than K. K. Slider himself. He will then arrive the next day and you will automatically tune into his performance of New Horizon’s Theme Song.

Once the concert is over, you’ll find that K. K. Slider will appear every Saturday evening (excluding the day of his concert) and perform a song for you. If you specifically request a K.K. Song, he will give you a copy of it to play in your home afterwards.

Tom Nook will also bestow upon you the most coveted NookPhone App – the Island Designer. With this, you’ll be able to terraform your island as you please, building out paths (and unlocking new designs from the Nook Stop), as well as being able to purchase permits to create, expand, and modify rivers and ponds – and alter the terrain of cliffs to create or remove elevated areas!
